Good Trouble: Advocating against discrimination in the tech industry

Since it hit our screens on BBC Iplayer, we couldn’t wait to see how Good Trouble presents a Latina woman working in the tech industry- especially following our ‘Women in Design’ webinars. Good Trouble is an American spin-off of The Fosters which follows the working lives of adopted sisters Mariana Adams Foster (Cierra Ramirez) and Callie Adams Foster (Maia Mitchell). The show fruitfully explores issues of gender discrimination, class discrimination, racism, discrimination in the work place, attacks against the LGBTQ community, and body shaming. Isn’t this the program we’ve all needed?

Could the design industry be the next sector to promote gender equality?

We’ve fought. We’ve won the right to vote. We’ve protested. We’ve achieved the right to equal education in the first world. But we’re still not equal to men, even in the workplace. This needs to change. At Digital Influx, we are passionate about promoting gender equality in the workplace and encourage other businesses and industries to follow accordingly. Could the design industry be an upcoming industry which provides equality between men and women?

Edtech is increasing in popularity, but will homeschooling become a trend?

Although the days of voluntary timestable learning via Brain Training on the Nintendo DS may be long gone, digital learning is still a popular trend. Today’s twenty year old’s were the first generation to welcome digital learning into their classrooms; being set homework tasks on MyMaths, taking quizes on BBC bitesize and Kahoot, and watching educational videos on Youtube such as My GCSE Science. There’s no lying that such ways of learning can be considered more fun and engaging than standard textbook reading. Thus, with today’s youth being app obsesesed, app designers have launched a variety of engaging edtech apps.

Deriving From the ‘I Can’ Mindset, Design Thinking Changes Teaching in India for the Better

As technology becomes ever more prevalent in both the working and academic spheres, parents are encouraging their kids to choose more technical subjects such as I.C.T and computer science in school. Children are also being persuaded to involve themselves in creative thinking to resolve solutions which cannot be performed by robots, nor learnt by writing comprehension tests, nor reading about history.

5 Graphic Design Mistakes You Might Be Making

The things that make good graphic design are nearly subjective; there are many design elements that are fundamental across the board. As years pass, so do the trends that make graphic design ‘cool’, think geometric shapes in the 80’s, bold colour-clashing in the 90’s, then fast-forward to current minimalism.

The Benefits of STEM Education in India

As we continue to move forward into a more technology focused future, STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) and the people that work in the sectors will be responsible for driving the economy. Because of this, it is essential that STEM is learnt early on in life to those who arguably have more open minds — children.

3 Ways EdTech Helps Students With Special Needs

School can be a tough time for many children. Students naturally face challenges in the classroom as they socialise with other children or find some subjects difficult, but these obstacles are magnified for those with special needs. Alongside this are dilemmas such as being away from family, making new friends, and having an equal amount of interaction with a teacher as with a teaching learning assistant.

India’s Female STEM Graduates Rank High Worldwide — So Why Is There Still Gender Disparity?

Education in India has now been free and compulsory for children aged 6 to 14 for over a decade since the Indian parliament passed a landmark Right to Education Act in August 2009. This act has been successful in that it has brought more girls back to school and drove their attention to typically male-dominated subjects such as science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

STEM Education: A Focus on India

Education is one of the most important assets to any person on Earth. Being educated surpasses any physical attribute and is a quality that will never run out — there are an infinite amount of ways to broaden your mind! UX and Music: What Does The Future Hold?

The beginning of 2020 saw many of us prepare for a year like no other. For a lot of people, 2020 was supposed to be the year. The year of seeing new cities and countries, the year of spending more time with loved ones, the year of learning new things — the year of living more. That was until a global pandemic happened.

Where to Get Ideas and Inspiration When You Are Working From Home

The COVID-19 pandemic has meant that many of us are working from home more than ever and will continue to do so as we transition into a ‘new normal’. It seems the small things of our pre-pandemic lives, such as the ability to gather ideas and inspiration from fellow colleagues, family and friends, and the places we visit, have been taken for granted.

The Top UI Design Trends of 2020

The pace that technology changes, along with how accessible technology is to many of us, means that design trends grow rapidly year by year. Designers must have an awareness of existing and upcoming design trends, and use their out-of-the-box thinking to improve and expand their skill set. Evaluating trends and predicting how they may evolve is necessary to keeping up to date with the current market.

The Do’s and Don’ts of Creating Your UX Portfolio

‘Your education is the most valuable thing you can have’ is a saying drilled into many of us from the first day of school to the last. After that, the focus of the phrase turns from education to experience — ‘Grades don’t define you’ and ‘Rome wasn’t built in a day’ burn our ears along with ‘What’s your next step?’.

Silence Is Violence — The Design Community Cannot Stay Quiet

As many teams had their routine morning Zoom calls earlier this week, there was news that dominated all talks of COVID-19 and weekend plans. Strong sadness and anger lingers in the air along with telling ourselves and others that “It’s just another normal day”, because in so many ways it couldn’t be further from that.

Dark Patterns — The Shady Side of UX/UI

To put it simply, UX design is all about understanding a user’s needs, wants and expectations to improve the overall usefulness and experience of a product. Designers must have a willingness to learn, empathy and a dynamic mindset to not only stay on trend, but to also expand their skill set to adhere to user expectations.

How Can Design Help Kindness?

The theme for Mental Health Awareness Week this year was kindness. Chosen for its ability to unlock our compassion and share it with one another, it is a quality that is told in the stories of when we’ve felt protected, supported, moved, and loved. The famous author Mark Twain stated that ‘Kindness is the language which the deaf can hear and the blind can see.’. It knows no physical, linguistic or cultural boundaries.
